I've had a G2 for several years and just bought a 420EX speedlite. The
manual has different instructions for Type A and Type B cameras, but does
not say if the G2 is A or B. Does anyone know?

You might want to check the trigger voltage on the speedlite. Digital
cameras are very finicky about trigger voltages. Many (particularly
older) flashes have too high a voltage and can fry the electronics
in the digital camera. There is a website I've seen in the past that
lists trigger voltages for many models of flash, however I don't have
    the link.

A Canon 420 speedlight will have safe voltage for any Canon camera.

I don't remember, but the 420EX (along with any Canon -EX flash) definitely
works with the Powershots. I use one with my G1.

As Tony already pointed out, trigger voltage is not a problem.
