Canon's lower-end lenses are so frigging ugly

Not really, I know of none that perform as well as good shorter-range
zooms. However, the Leica made for 4/3rds 14-150mm is apparently a
good lens, though I've never seen one and haven't read any reviews.
It is considerably more expensive than the current 18-200mm crop of
    lenses.

  2. Even toy lenses can be very handy.

  5. And there are enough cases where they are the best answer.

Well, it's not only Rich, and it's not only Canon users who
get upset over the look of lenses apparently. Yesterday I
went in to see my local Camera purveyor, and when I got
there the salesman I normally see was on a phone call and
looked VERY frustrated. When he got off he explained to me...
This bloke had bought a D80 twin lens kit earlier in the
day. The D80 twin lens kit consists of an 18-50'ish and a
70'ish to 300. Customer was upset because the 70'ish to 300
didn't have gold lettering. Reckoned it didn't look the
part. Now the D60 comes with the same 18-50'ish lens, and a
50'ish-200 that DOES have gold lettering. So customer wanted
to return the D80 and get a D60 because in his opinion the
kit lens looked nicer with it's gold lettering.

If he's really after fashion jewelry he should also try and get a
    carry strap labelled Nikon D900

Well, you may laugh, but my new Canon 50D came with a red, black, and white
neck strap that's the gaudiest I ever saw. ;^)

Yeah, probably. But my guess is that the average thief will grab any
expensive-looking camera left within his reach, no matter what it says on the
strap. Possibly a bigger reason for replacing the OE strap is just to look
    less like a Canon shill.

But most people point the lens _away_ from their faces when they are
    taking photographs.
