Capturing video from a DVD / DVD recorder?

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm trying to resolve an issue
mentioned on a separate post, where I'm having trouble getting my PC to
    recognise my camcorder.

As a workaround, I was wondering about buying a cheap DVD recorder, and
recording from my camera onto DVD. Could I then capture the material
from the DVD for editing using my editing software (Power Directer)?
I've had a quick look in PD but can't immediately see a way of
capturing from a DVD or other storage media. Is this usually possible?

    Cheers

    Will

    It's usually called "importing".

The movie will be converted and compressed when recorded to DVD you can just
pop the disc in to the computer DVD drive and copy the Vob files to the hard
drive then rename them mpeg. Whether your editor can edit these compressed
files easily is another mater some struggle some dont.
You might be better sorting out why you can not transfer your files
