A report about the most recent attack of the infamous Blue Screen of
    Death !

My system runs on Microsoft's Windows 98SE, and it has a Sony CRX-168B
CDRW. It's been very reliable, it may be a little bit slow, but it
    doesn't give me many headache.

Recently, I downloaded and installed Nero's 6.6.0.16 on my system just
to try it out, and that's where the attack of Blue Screen of Death
    began.

While I can compile and burn music cd, create vcd, burn Linux distros
from ISO that I've downloaded, etc, I can NOT get Windows 98 to read
    the CDRW drive !

Everytime I try to click on the drive, I got a Blue Screen of Death,
telling me that there are errors in CDFS.VXD, and then everything
stops. Pressing <CTRL>-<ALT>-<DEL> doesn't do anything, pressing
    <CTRL>-<C> doesn't help either.

The only thing that I can do is to press that reboot button.

I know the problem lies somewhere in between Nero 6.6.0.16 and CDFS.VXD
because everything goes smoothly before I install Nero, so I de-install
Nero, hoping that the problem goes away.

    And I was wrong.

Somehow something, maybe some settings, or some underlying low-level
stuffs that got installed with Nero 6.6.0.16 got left behind, and they
are still playing havoc with my system.

I still can NOT get Windows 98SE to read my Sony CRX-168B CDRW drive.
Everytime I click on it, I got that Blue Screen of Death thing.

    What's happening ?

Is there any way to cure this problem without having to re-install
    Windows ?

    Can somebody help, please ?

    Thank you !

Check if CDFS.VXD is the win98se original, and if not, restore with SFC?

How about uninstalling Nero with Nero CleanTool and then reinstall Nero
    6?

    Before reinstall, delete Upper/Lower Filters:

Since I've run only NT versions for years, I'm not familiar with
CDFS.VXD - except for the infamous property of its replacment:
presenting audio tracks as files. Since that entails lying to the OS, it
is not possible in NT. If you have installed that variant, I strongly
recommend returning to the one that came with Windows. If you google
CDFS.VXD, you'll find references to the problems the replacement can cause.

Nero is reading the disc correctly; it could not write to it without
reading it. Explorer and other programs apparently are running into
trouble with it. My guess is that you now have at least two conflicting
versions of the module and that your problem arises from that. The fact
    that Nero's does not go away when you uninstall is not surprising;
manual removal would be the best way though Ahead does provide a free
package to scrub as much as possible of its remains from your system.

This is on another machine where nothing is "optimized". It has a
"virgin" system.ini, a "virgin" msdos.sys and everything else.

    CDFS.VXD ---->

    File Version: 4.10.1999
Description: CDFS Virtual Device (Version 4.0)
Copyright: Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. 1988-1999
    Filesize: 59,157 Bytes
    Filedate: 09-29-00

Is the above the original version of CDFS.VXD that comes with Win98SE
    ?!

I've already uninstalled Nero using "add/remove program" under Control
Panel. Can that "cleantool" thing work when Nero is supposed to be
    "gone" ?!

Thanks for your info, and I'll try out your suggestion !

    Thanks again !

    Thanks Mike !

FYI, the CDFS.VXD in this machine is the original version - not that
    "alternative" one.

What you said about Explorer and other programs having problem
accessing the CDRW is true, butsince there is but only one version
inside the "c:\windows\system\iosubsys" directory, I don't think there
ought to be any conflict there.

However, for the sake of completeness, I'm enclosing a detailed error
message (actually there are two) below, see if anyone can tell me what
    the heck they mean:

    Error Message #1:

    = = ===============================================================

    Windows
An exception has occurred at 0028:DCB713E2 in VxD CDFS(01) + 00000542.
This was called from 0028:DCB0F4E8 in VxD CDFS(04) + 00000078. It may
    be possible to continue normally.

    * Press any key to continue
    * Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart your computer. You will lose any
    unsaved information in all applications.

    Press any key to continue

    = = ===============================================================

After that, Error Message #2 appears:

    = = ===============================================================

    Windows
An exception has occurred at 0028:C1C9E0F0 in VxD DDRAW(03) + 000006F0.
This was called from 0028:DCB0F490 in VxD CDFS(04) + 00000020. It may
    be possible to continue normally.

    * Press any key to continue
    * Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart your computer. You will lose any
    unsaved information in all applications.

    Press any key to continue

    = = ===============================================================

Then everything freezes ! I have to press that reboot button at this
    point.

Thanks for the pointer, but unfortunately, the above link for deleting
    Upper/Lower Filters: (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=27008) landed
    me at the following page:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=gp;[ln];kberror&style=error

And that latter page stated the following:

"The Knowledge Base (KB) Article You Requested Is Currently Not
    Available"

If you know of an archive of the page, please share it with me. Thanks !

Hi ! Regarding Upperfilters in 98, I've search on the Net and came upon
    this page: http://www.bhacorp.com/support/faq_gold7/01-2.html

In it, it mentioned that in the registry: HKLM/Enum, if the CDRW drive
is an ATAPI, then there ought to be a sub-directory "IDE" under "ENUM",
but the registry in this machine has no "IDE" entry !

It has ACPI, ESDI, FLOP. HTREE, INFRARED, ISAPNP, MF, MONITOR, Network,
PCI, Root, SCSI, SW, SWCNX, USB, VIAUDIO, but there no "IDE".

I checked under "SCSI" and long and behold, the Sony CRX-168B CDRW
drive appears. Unfortunately, there's no "UpperFilters" nor
    "LowerFilters" associated with the CDRW.

However, there is an entry of ClassGUID, which has
    "{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}" as the content.

That "{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}" thing has been mentioned
couple of times in various places on the Net, associated with the
"UpperFilters". It's just that all the time they talked about things
under XP, and since the OS on this machine is 98SE, I'm afraid of
deleting the ClassGUID for I don't know what kind of damages it could
    do.

I really need guidance now. Please help !

    Thanks in advance ! !

No. That's the hot fix mentioned here. You must have applied the update
some time. Check the creation date to get a clue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=274175

(File size is given as 58,644 on the page, but that's in error. Correct
    size is 59,157 like yours.)

Even though there isn't any known conflict with Nero 6, you may restore
the original cdfs.vxd from the win98se cd with SFC (after saving the
    current version).
Winxp will squak about the registry changes, but there wouldn't be
    issues with win9x.

Made two booboos. The correct link is 270008, one '0' is missing. And it
applies to win2k/xp, not to win9x.

As mentioned on the page, the above applies to win2k/xp. There's no
    "IDE" in win9x.
Don't delete ClassGUID. Read about my booboos mentioned in the other
    post.
Don't want to put a damper, but don't think cdfs.vxd is the primary
culprit. Get rid of all the cRoxio junk, uninstall/reinstall Nero.
    What errors do you get?
