Ad in Toronto paper from Aden Camera. Nikon D40 and 18-55mm lens,
$419.00. Nikon P6000 p&s, $419.00. The watershed has been reached,
it's time to make a decision. Which would you choose?

Well in the U.S. The D40 kit is $409 and the P6000 is $360.

Of those two, I'd choose the P6000. The items in the SLR kit are too low
end. A decent D-SLR with equivalent range IS/VR lenses to the P6000 will
    run you about $650 now.

I use DSLRs for a living. I also recommend P&S cameras for those who's
needs don't run to spending serious money on their hobby.

The kit lenses on Olympus and Nikon are better quality than the KLs on
Canon but even so, a Kit lens on a DSLR like a D40 will produce better
results using it's built in functions than a P&S.

Different strokes for different folks. When I go on holiday or travel, I
use a P&S that has 10X zoom and fits in my pocket. It's JPEG output is
fine for prints up to about 8"x10" but the distortion in the lens -
something not easily seen by most people, is considerable as is the
    Chromatic Aberrations and flare.

You get these with a DSLR but in a less noticeable form. For some people
DSLRs are a pathway to further enjoyment of their hobby. For others P&S
are quite good enough for what they do. Why do we keep needing this
stupid argument about which is best?

My god - did you ever hear of 'clip'?

We get the stupid argument bit mainly because the people so responding
seem to have nothing better to do and fail to appreciate that while all
cameras produce images the needs of the person using the camera vary widely.
I have seen reviews where it was claimed the kit lens on Pentax is
    fairly decent.

Not really. Kit lenses are often good choices. Life is not
about always searching for the best, but rather what makes sense after
    considering the cost.

My father taught me I could do anything I wanted or get
anything I wanted, but he also warned me that all things have their
cost. He was right about that as he was about almost all things.

There would be no need to keep stating these things over and over
again if you simply posted demonstration images. When a whole gang of
people, at least some of whom presumably have cameras, keep endlessly
repeating the same photographic argument when it could be easily
settled once and for all with some demonstration photographs I begin
to wonder if perhaps there is some special difficulty with producing
images which demonstrate these points :)

Nobody is going to pay any attention to you, or your stupid theories.

    BECAUSE

    1. You never state which marvelous Cameras you use.
    2. You never show any of the marvelous pictures you take. 3. You never
answer any questions except by reposting your long tedious list of your
    theories.
    4. You don't seem to know your own name.

    Go AWAY.

And I suppose you think folks actually read your useless drivel simply
because you use it to respond to everything.

  14. No, he does it to get responses from those who cannot resist "refuting"
his wild ass claims, and from those like me who often exhort others to
completely not respond to his spew.

He's on a mission to damage the content here, and would like nothing
better to brag that he's destroyed the NG.

There's a whole psych profile on this kind of thing, but I charge for a
    written analysis.

The thing that puzzles me is how much trouble is it to come up with all
    these fake names.
The only way I know is to edit the profile in my newsreader. This is ok
when setting the thing up but to do this each time he does a switch
sounds like an awful lot of effort for whatever kick he gets out of it.
People also mention munging the isp, I've no idea how that would be
done, but then I don't need to know.
The post itself is simply inaccurate. There actually is a very good case
for most casual photographers to use a decent p&s and the sx10-is looks
good and some guy posted some great bird pics. But that long zoom stops
down pretty quickly. I was just watching a news broadcast of
congressional hearings with the auto makers. There were a lot of cameras
there, every one was a dslr with a long lens. Of course they wouldn't be
cheap, but there's a hell of a difference doing photography for a living
    rather than just for fun.
