Comast DVR: playback a tad blurry/soft/lower quality...

Discussion in 'Amateur Video Production' started by Thomas G. Marshall, Aug 3, 2006.

  1. I've been pondering something.

Two weeks ago I picked up the new HD compatible dual tuner DVR for my
comcast digital feed. I'm driving my standard TV via S-Video.

The channels will display razor sharp, but the dvr playback is enough
soft/blurry for me to notice. A little like comparing two mpegs or jpegs of
    high and slightly lesser quality.

Note that this is not an HD issue---this is all standard recording. And the
comcast boxes don't offer multiple recording qualities, so there is no
setting for me to check here. And the comcast technical support person said
that they've never seen that, nor heard of it, and two others she chatted
    with in the background agree.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Thomas,
I don't know how the Comcast box differs from the Scientific Atlanta 8000
that I have with Time Warner but I haven't noticed any difference in picture
because basically everything going through the box is recorded, so if you
pause on something it's instant, doesn't switch over and suddenly start
recording, it digitized and always being buffered up to a certain amount of
    time on the viewing channel.
Perhaps its something else, do you mean you see a difference from the entire
dvr box as opposed to direct tuner on your tv? That is possible easily as it
would be sharper with no encoding and compressing at all.

    Just a thought,
    AnthonyR.

    Which model dvr specifically?

Could be that the splitter in the dvr is delivering a stronger signal to
one of the two tuners than it is to the other, and that the recorder is
consistently using the weaker tuner. What happens if you switch between
the two tuners during live viewing? Do you see any difference in that
    case?

  4. Which model do you have? Motorola 3412 or Motorola 6412?
