Coolpix 3100 turns off after splash screen

My coolpix 3100 regularly dies just after it powers up - it gets as
far as the 'coolpix' splash screen then dies, retracting its lens.

Have tried new batteries, a different CF card and resetting all
    settings to default.

Occasionally, it will still work but it seems to report even new
batteries as 'low power' very early on.

Anyone got any ideas how I can fix this?

I don't have Coolpix but just wonder *if* it has a small_battery like most
film and about all digital cameras have?

I am guessing that small_battery may be dead after some years.

Have you done the firmware upgrade from the web site? I recall that
ineffective use of the batteries was a problem that was addressed in the
2100 upgrade. Try using the Lithium batteries - they're more expensive,
not rechargeable, but they run a LONG time.

I tried the firmware update - it improved it - it now dies having been
in viewing mode for about 1sec!
