D200 in 'raw' mode only, displays image in playback???

I took some 'raw' only shots last night, and to my surprise, they
immediately appeared on the camera monitor. I am under the impression
that there is no in-camera 'raw' conversion, that is why you have the
option of adding a jpg to actually see what you've shot if you're
shooting 'raw'. During playback, the file shows .nef in the middle of
the lower screen, and RAW in blue on the right side. Again, no .jpg
    was choosen.

I set the camera to 'raw' only both using the QUAL button and the
menus, but it still shows an image. ACDSee sees it a .nef file and
cannot read it (I don't have a converter yet).

Is there something going on here? Thanks

It makes a jpeg anyways to produce the preview and histogram and it's
    embedded in the raw file.

If that's the case, no prob. On page 28 of the manual, it states that
raw images can "only be seen on a computer" so I figured nothing
would show up, but maybe you're right about the jpg anyway. I wonder
what the quality is, if I don't choose it.
