Difficulty exporting movie files from premiere pro 7

I've recently been trying to get to grips with Adobe Premiere Pro 7, putting
together a short sequence to try out all the features but when I come to
export a movie file to Windows AVI all I get is a blue screen with no
picture, the audio is there but no picture, this happens when I use any
compression such as divx or cinepac, I can export to uncompressed AVI but at
1.3Gb for 40 seconds it's not really a suitable option.
Can anyone help to point out the problem and hopefully a solution, (I'm
guessing it's something to do with the video codecs)

    PS I'm using aP4 2.8GHz, 512MB, 128MB graphics card, XP Home.

I've had the exact same experience; sometimes but not always. I'm using
Premiere Pro v1.5.1. I've not been able to identify a cause either. I hope
    you get an answer.
I've occasionally used the 'workaround' of exporting an uncompressed file
and using the free Windows Media Encoder to encode to Windows Media Video.
This has worked but it's a pain, especially when the Adobe Encoder should
    work and sometimes does.
