Anyone know if the Sony DCR-TRV130E will play Hi8 tapes?

Almost certainly - the 120 certainly does, and the 130 was the next model

Thanks. I thought it should. However, I have borrowed a 130 and inserted one
of my Hi8 tapes. Nothing appears to happen when I press play. The tape
moves, but no video is output (either on screen or from the video output
socket). I can't see anything on the menus to enable either.

That link surprises me, though it is for the TRV130 (US/Canada), not the
TRV130E, which is/was the European model.
My DCR-TRV120E is about six years old now, but certainly plays Hi8 tapes
recorded on my much older 2000E.

My recollection was that the 130E was the next model "up" from the 120E, but
the only improvement (IIRC) was the ability to save stills to a Memory
Stick. Maybe it was a 220E.

    Sorry for misleading you.

Assuming that the OP means "does the TRV130E play tapes recorded on Hi8
camcorders" (not quite what was asked).

Late model Sony Digi8 camcorders no longer support the playing of tapes
that have been recorded on either 8mm or Hi8 camcorders.

The manual seems clear about this on page 27.

That's what I meant. Perhaps my use of "Hi8" was incorrect. I assumed Hi8
meant analogue, and Digital8 meant, well, digital.
Ah, if only I had the manual.

Which seems to suggest (to me at least) that the Digi8 format camcorder
range is to be phased out in the not too distant future.
