Does XH A1 focus worse than a TRV900?

The other day I was shooting an opera with an XH A1 and was trying to
autofocus on the curtain before the show started. It started focus hunting.
If I increase the gain then the focus locks on. This is the second time I
noticed auto focusing problem with the XH A1 in mildly low light situation.

I have shot in similar lighting before using a TRV900 and I never had such
focusing problem. Is AF a weak area in the XH A1, or do I have a defective
cam? I still have a few months left for warranty but I don't want to mail it
in for repair if it works "as designed".

I ended up shooting the show in manual focus, which also has its problem,
namely, unable to check focus while recording, so the MC, who stood closer
than most other performers, went slightly out of focus.
