I downloaded several versions of an AVI from the web. Each of them
has the same symptoms - windows media player opens, the screen is
black, the sound volume slide is grey and has an x next to it (no
audio), the pointer moves along the bar showing where you are in the
movie relatively and the timer shows total time and amount of time
into the movie up to that point. in each version with different file
sizes, I get the same total time.

I downloaded virtualdub and the audio stream section is blank on one
of these files, so there's no audio huh!? Trying to play the avi in
virtual dub also gets a black screen - I guess it's just a black
screen app with no audio? Seems weird that all the files ahve the
same running length though - 1 hour 2 min... I would think if they
were just random blank files, there'd be different file sizes?

My first guess is that you don't have the necessary codec... but I'll tell
you what would help. You could point out the site (if it isn't a secret)
which might help shed some light on the problem.

The other thing you could consider is contacting somebody "at that site"
since they should have some insights into the problem and a vested interest
in solving it. We would be stuck guessing and that could take weeks.
