I would like to purchase a mini DV tape player or preferrably
player/recorder so I don't burn out the motor on my optura 20 before its
time. Is there anything out there in the under $500 category that's a
    winner?

    Thanks,

A decent player/recorder will cost you far more than a camcorder so wait for
a sale and grab a second one.

The motor replacement is likely to cost a heck of a lot less than $ 500, so why
bother. Anyway, Buydig.com lists the Optura 20 for $479.
