Many people felt, before the "N" series" that having the extra letter
"E" in the name of the camera was unneeded extravagance. Obviously they
are wrong as Canon have kept the extavagant "E" in the "N" series of the

  3. Check Canon's site for announced new products. These new cameras are
supposed to have improved AF performance among other things.

Still no dedicated (red or IR) AF assist lamp.
Still no backlighted LCD. Still no bonafide spotmetering.
If Konica Minolta weren't such a loser company with crappy corporate logo,
the Maxxum/Dynax 7 would be a clearly better choice.

Nope, there is a lit LCD now. I don't have one on my 7e/30, although I
got one on the 600, never understood why they didn't add this feature
    right from the beginning.

Thanks for the correction! I wonder if this is a Europe-only feature?
I'm fairly certain I recall reading the LCD still wasn't backlighted.
Perhaps a mistake in the press release re-hash...

Damn, I almost thought it's an Europe-only, feature, too. But then I
realized that from one point of their homepage, Canon USA still links
to the old 7/7E site. The backlit display is mentioned on the real
7N/7NE specification site in the section "Other":

However, the lit display is really just the smallest treat. I'd prefer
the other 2 things you mentioned (spotmetering and near IR AF assist
lamp). The EOS 50/Elan II had at least the AF assist lamp. And now
there's this IMHO useless white floodlight thingy instead.
