Can anyone tell me for certain whether the same flash circuitry in the EOS30
is the same as in the Digital 300/350??

Or is someone willing to sell me their 300D for $400 so I can check for
    myself?

P.s. if you live in Perth, Ross Auctions have one up for bids tomorrow
    (8JUN).

I believe the 300d is slightly less capable than the 30/33[v] family,
most likely to do with Flash Exposure Compensation and sync speed.

The 30/33 can do FEC, the 300d relies on the flash being able to do it
    ... i believe.

Having said that, i've noticed that my 300d has often said 'FEC' on the
display when i tinker exposure compensation with a flash attached.
