    Bear with me...

I've read that by taping over some of the contacts on a 420ex, the unit
would fire at "full power". I'm assuming that the 550ex can be fired at
full power by using this method. The 550ex can also be fired at full power
in it's "manual mode". Problem is, when using a 550ex as a master and
420ex as wireless slave, the 550ex won't work as master if it's in manual

    So here's the question:

If I want to use the 550ex as master and 420ex as slave, and have them both
fire at full power, would the 550ex still be able to act as master if some
    of it's contacts were taped?
I know that there are other ways to force both flashes to fire at full power
(http://www.eosdoc.com/manuals.asp?q=blindFEL) but they involve using the
    FEL before every shot.

I don't own a 550ex, but I hope to soon, and would like to know the answer
    before buying.

I think you should be looking at getting a set of strobes rather than
fiddling around with all these "work-arounds".

Look at a used Bowens Esprit system, or Alien Bees, or perhaps something
    else that fits your budget.
