I would appreciate some comments regarding which scanner will deliver higher
quality scans. the Epson Perfection 4490 or the 4990.

I have the choice of getting an Epson Perfection 4490 or a 4990. I realize
that the 4990 is a bit more expensive, but the key to me is does it perform
better. I will be scanning old color photos (5 X 7 inches or less) and 35
mm color negatives. I want to know if the 4990 delivers noticeably higher
    quality scans.

I'll be putting the scans into Photoshop 7 for final touch-ups. Then, I'll
    be printing them.

    Thanks!

Thanks Doug. I did notice that the Dmax for the 4990 was 4.0, while the
4490 was 3.4. I just don't know whether this is a noticeable difference
    given my intended uses.

I was considering a dedicated film scanner, but that would be a more complex
option for me now. You see, I was given a 4490 for Christmas, with the
opportunity to upgrade it to a 4990, at my expense, if I would like to. So,
I am left with the question of the importance of the difference in the Dmax
ratings. Do you think that the higher Dmax with the 4990 will make much of
    a difference?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

You cannnot see any difference at all. As already said, both scanners are
    overkill.
