or to put it more clearly, line drawing or text in B&W. I have only
recently bought a 3490 and although it is a little fiddly compared to
other scanners I have used I am getting the hang of it, except when I
try to scan B&W plane line stuff, like timesheets etc. What I usually
end up with is patchy, lines often broken or rough. Is there anything
I can do apart from using colour or greyscale to get around this?

Thanks for the help. I am just using the scan software which comes
with the scanner. How would i adjust these things in that?
I did a reasonable scan in grayscale, though it was no easy getting
the software to grab the whole of the area, for some reason it was
even chopping the text in half, but I got round that in the end.
Obviously it would be nice to be able to do a quick clean B&W scan
    though.

Thanks... I had just worked out you were meaning in the professional
mode. It'll take me some getting used to but I'll get there :O)
