exporting over firewire to camera

  1. I'm trying to save my edited video to tape over a firewire interface.
Things go well for the first minute or two, but then the image on the
camera's LCD starts to get a bit jumpy and out of sync, and the sound
skips too. Sometimes the image stops completely for 5 or 10 seconds.
Capturing was ok, so I think my hard drive and cpu are up to the task.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

    Details:

    camera: Panasonic PV-GS50D-K miniDV
OS: linux, kernel 2.4.22, either dv1394 or video1394 kernel module
software: kino (I also tried dvconnect, but it chugged away and
nothing reached the camera at all)
    cpu: 2GHz P4

Thanks for any guesses at what could be the matter, or suggestions
    for anything to try.

  3. For the record, I managed to get things to work by turning off
background jobs (i.e. the cron daemon) and raising the priority
    of the capturing process.

Also, I upgraded the linux kernel from 2.4.22 to 2.4.23, and that
seemed to help a bit too.
