Guy in local camera store says exposure bracketing is not possible with this
    camera. Is he correct?

did you know that nikon has a web site?
the 5400 is even on the web site,
    complete with specs.

if he or you had looked,
you would have found that, per the nikon specs,
    the 5400 does bracketing
and also has p s a m modes of operation.

Yep, it even has an "auto-bracketing" mode, where you can choose between 3
or 5 shots, bracketed by +- .3, .7, or 1.0 EV per step.
