I took some pictures with the "d" wide angle converter today. I noticed
that in most of the photos, there was a significant darkening in the 4
corners. is that normal even for the "d" wide angle converter?

It's typical and not the only converter to have that problem.
I usually fix it with Picture Window Pro http://www.dl-c.com
    Transformation>Grey>Light Falloff.
Real nice tool that will remember your settings after you find the right
numbers to make it go away, so you can quickly fix all the shots.

  3. Out of curiosity, does stopping down (e.g. to f/5.6 or eve f/8) help?

the shots were taken at f2. will try the f5.6-8 shots this weekend when it
    is brighter.
