Film scanners + APS?

Discussion in 'Scanners' started by Peter Martens, Dec 29, 2005.

  1. Friends,

I have about 60 rolls of APS film that I've shot over the years that I'd
like to convert to digital for archiving purposes, and I was wondering if
anyone here has had experience using a film scanner with APS.

I really don't know what the best way to go is; I was thinking about a Nikon
Cool Scan V, but I've heard their APS adapter is prone to failure, and I was
hoping to purchase used equipment to save money. I'm obviously not a
professional photographer (this is why I've used APS for so long), and I was
hoping for something relatively easy-to-use, but still producing quality
    scanned images.

    Thanks!

    I have a silly question.
Considering that APS is slightly smaller in frame size than 135 film,
why not just use the 135 neg holder and crop away the excess in
    photoshop after you've scanned it?

  3. Minolta's Dimage scanner used to have an APS holder as an option. I believe
that this was for the previous version of the scanner and that the APS
holder may not be available from stock anymore.

A friend has the scanner and APS holder but has not tried it out.

Might be worth trying to find a second-hand scanner and APS holder.

    Regards, Ian.

  5. As of a few months ago, Adorama Camera in N.Y.C. had both the Minolta
Dimage Dual IV Scanner and the APS adapter. You might want to try
Adorama. This scanner is also very good with 35mm. negatives and slides.

Ian, this sounds like a wise idea... I'll do just that.

Also, if your friend wants to part with his APS adapter (if he's never used
it, and never plans to in the future), I'd be more than willing to take it
off his hands. A friend of mine just happens to have an older Minolta
Dimage Scan Dual that I'd like to try, but he has no idea where to find an
    APS adapter for it.

Shoot me an email if you want.
