Online I see that retailers are recommending 52 mm filters for the Oly
C-750, but I measured the filter threads with my caliper and find that
it is roughly 39.5 mm - very confusing!

What is the correct size for Olympus filters?

    Hi Bill.

An extension tube is used... screws not to the lens, but
rather the body, and ends up at 52mm.

Not absolutely certain for the c-750, but all of my
    c-7xx's use the cla-4 adapter.

Google for olympus and cla and you'll find them.

    Hi Ken,

All I'm looking for is a UV filter to protect the lens. If I need to
get an extension tube, oversize filter, and probably a new lens cap,
this may be more hassle then I want to go through. Maybe I'd be
smarter to just be more careful with the lens! :)

The c7## series require an adapter. The "thread" on the lens is just
ribbing. There are aftermarket adapters as well (which may have
different thread sizes). The C8080, C5060 and C7070 have threads on
their lenses and a separate lens adapter (unlike other Olympus cameras).
