  1. Hi,
I'm connecting my Sony HC42e to a compaq NC8230 laptop running windows
xp pro. I've bought a firewire cable, plugged it in and away I go.
    Until..........
    it disconnects.
Just keeps doing it all night at intermittant times. Even does it if I
    do nothing!
I'vemanged to transfer video ok but then it disconects.
    Any ideas?
    tia,
    Richard

  2. Swap components until you find the guilty one...

    I would (in order):
    - try another FireWire cable
    - try (if possible) another FireWire port on the PC
    - try the same cam-cable on another PC
. if works OK, check the laptop:
    - check/update drivers
    - check O.S. (stop processes/firewall/virus shields)
    - try another FireWire card
    - re-install O.S. (eventually a clean install on a separate partition)
    - try with another camera

    Good luck,

Not easy with a laptop <g>

In addition to Roberto's suggestions, turn of ALL power saving features (at
least while capturing) and check what other devices are sharing the
    firewire's IRQ.
