Firewire PCI card and power

Having upgraded my PC in the last couple of weeks, I noticed that my FW card
has a power supply connector (the same type as the floppy drive).

Now the card works fine just plugged into the PCI slot so why would this
card have a power connector on it?

    Thanks

  2. This is just a guess, based on probables. If you would like to
post the make and model I could research further (mostly 'cos I'm
    intruiged).

Firewire can source quite a lot of current on the 6 pin version,
much more than USB. If you have a power-hungry device (iPod?)
connected to each of the 3 sockets (typical cards have 3 sockets) then
I'd suspect that the PCI slot won't have enough power, hence the need
to connect direct to the PSU.

    Regards,
    Harry.
