I have a problem - had my sony dv camcorder for 4 years connected to a no
name firewire card, no problems at all always connected and would show up in
my computer and all capture software when connected.

Yesterday morning it wouldn't connect - windows (XP home) just doesn't see
it, then it it did and was connected all day whilst I captured 3 tapes to
the computer. When I turned it off it dissappeared and then I turned it
back on and it reappeared then I tried once again and it is no longer
recognised. The fireware card is ok as I'm running an external hard drive
through it so I'm happy that it works ok.

Could this be as simple as a broken/faulty cable? I did staighten the cable
out but can't believe it would then work all day if the connection was

Any suggestions before I go get a new cable would be welcomed

The cable is certainly the first (cheapest) thing to try. Could just
as easily be the 1394 interface in the deck.

well I tried another cable and it connected immediately so I guess it was
    the cable!

    thanks for the reply

  4. I was going to suggest it is the fleeting nature of fame, but it seems that
    you have it under control.
