I have a 717 and heard that there was a firmware upgrade a while back? I
check the Sony site but didn¹t have any luck. Anybody know anything about
this and where I could obtain the upgrade?

I have owned the 717 since it was a "New" model, and I have never seen or
heard of a firmware upgrade for that camera.

I know of no problem (other than maybe another language in the menu that
    requires one).

Maybe you are referring to an AF bug that some of them had? Sony
published a serial number list of affected 717's, and mine was on that
list. However, I never encountered the problem (AF failure when using
the laser-assist system in some conditions), so I didn't bother with
taking it back. I've sold it since then (and miss it, sniff!). The
new owner hasn't encountered a problem either.

If your camera isn't on that list, I don't think there are any
applicable upgrades. Your nearest Sony warranty franchise should have
that list, or be able to get it.

Further info.. A strange way of telling if your camera has the `bug`
which was referred to as an `HAF problem`:

A list of affected serial numbers (MAYBE - copied off a blog, so who
    knows how accurate it is!!):

    1710001 to 1724200 1850001 to 1851100 1851152 to 1851232 1851365 to
    1851450 1860001 to 1861526 1861530 to 1861532 1861534 1861536 to
    1861540 1861544 to 1861545 1861547 to 1861548 1861551 to 1861792
    1861801 to 1862064 1862088 to 1862099

To add to the discussion, Ive been told that the firmware on the 717 is NOT
upgradeable.. Thats probably why the units with the auto-focus problem had to
    go back.
