flash hot shoe sync cord adapter problem

I recently purchased a Sunpak auto 433AF flash (with an NE type hot
    shoe for Nikon AF cameras).

My camera is a Nikon F3 and I want to use the flash on a light stand
by connecting a hot shoe/sync cord adapter to the flash and the other
end of the sync cord to my PC terminal on the camera. (The flash
doesn't have a terminal and the F3 has a non-standard hot shoe that
won't work with most flash guns). This arrangement works with other
Sunpak flashes with the NE type hot shoe, but for some reason the
adaptor won't fit on the model 433 flash.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to use this flash off-camera
    with an F3?

    Thanks.
