So-called "anamorphic widescreen" (16F16 signal) can be recorded with
all VCRs - even on decades-old Betamax models.

The only potential problem is that your tv set might not automatically
change to widescreen mode when you play back these tapes. If your
Freeview box outputs so-called "line 23 widescreen signalling" (or "line
23 WSS" for short) there's a good chance that it will be recorded on the
VHS tape, and the tv set - guided by the signal on the tape - will
subsequently change the mode automatically, but if it doesn't, you will
have to resort to changing the mode manually using your remote.

  3. better to buy a good dvd-recorder which handles widescreen properly.
panasonic dvd-ram or hard-drive recorders will do this better than
    vhs.
    resolution will also be better.
