    Hi,

I'm pretty new to video editing and would like to know if there exists a
freeware editor that would allow me to take an AVI file as input, add an
MP3 backing track to it, and additionally allow me to compress the
resultant file with DivX, or whatnot.

Ah - I've tried this and it does all I need except allowing me to use an
MP3 as a backing sound. It only allows WAV files.

VirtualDubMod is a rewritten version of the standard VirtualDub and it
supports adding MP3 format audio to a video.
