After studying magazines and looking at reviews on the web I actually went
into a shop this morning and held a number of cameras.

Fuji 5000 (in budget) felt cheap and plastic like and looked too small.
Fuji 602 (slightly over budget but I guess I will stretch) felt nice and
more solid than the 5000 but not ringing my bell.
Minolta Dimage Z (in budget) felt like a small toy - no way.
Canon Rebel felt really solid and looked like a real camera - but do I start
    saving some more?

I look forward to going into a better shop with a larger range so I can feel
    some more!

Calm down lad! If you keep this up you'll go blind!
(And what good would a camera do you then?)

Ha ha, I know exactly how you feel. I thought the S5000 was a slr camera
that someone had put through a hot wash and it had shrunk !

Here's another camera in that range to consider - the Minolta DiMAGE 7
series. Similar to the 602 for output, etc. And yes, the DiMAGE Z looks
embarrasing to use. I wonder who the designer was for it - Helen Keller ?
