    HD Photo: The Next JPG?

    Microsoft have been working on what they say is a revolutionary digital
    photo format for years now, and now, Redmond plans to submit the new
    format to an organization that has the main task of analyzing new
    international standards. ‘HD Photo’, which was formerly called “Windows
    Media Photo”, is Microsoft’s answer to the aging JPG format. Apart from
    having twice the quality of traditional JPG pictures, HD Photo files
    also offer a better compression ratio along with other advanced features
    for today’s digital-imaging applications.

    Time will tell whether HD Photo can supplant JPEG by gaining the
    support of printer, camera and application vendors. But Microsoft is
    supporting the format in products such as its Vista and XP operating
    systems and has already gained an important vendor ally.

    No, but you will have to activate each one online.

    There is already a HD Photo plugin for Photoshop that you can download
    to save files in this format. It is part of Microsoft's Pro Tools
    package for photographers.
