help identifying insect subject

    Man, that is weird. Not a spider (only 6 legs that I can see). Giant thorax,
    pinhead...
    some kinda ant. Are those mandibles hanging out there??
    Kill it and take it to an entim... uh bugman at a university or cooperativr
    extension.

    I googled species + ant + carolina

  4. Don't know what it is.. very glad I haven't been on contact with one though.
    And I find it funny that you grabbed a camera ... i would have stepped on
    it!! LOL

    My best guess is it's something in the hemiptera class. But it doesn't have
    wings (yet?). Maybe it's in the first half of it's life cycle.

    I also thought perphaps a type of ant, but the head is too small. That
    mouth looks like a proboscis of some sort so presumably this guy eats
    plants.

    You would have had to jump up on the top of the garbage can container roof
    to step on it. As you were climbing up there it would probably have jumped
    on you. <g>

    My girl friend won't let me kill anything if she's around, but even if she
    wasn't it doesn't seem in the spirit of nature hiking to kill the creatures
    we find out there. :)
