  1. Help wanted re photographs from the 1930s

    The following are all on this page;

    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos.html

    This photograph

    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_98.jpg

was captioned on the back Pamela Audrey Webb, and her age was given as one or about one

this photograph is captioned Pamela and David

    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_99.jpg

David Webb was born in 1931 - he died last year. His sister is still alive although I am informed she is too elderly and infirm to contribute to the debate

being somewhat older than her brother and clearly by now having girlish looks, she is the dark haired girl on the left. Comparing the other child withthe one in photo 98, I was of the opinion that it had been miscaptioned but asked a cyber-colleague for a second opinion. She is a mother of 3, and tells me it is not the same child.

Can anyone shed some light on this, ie is the dark haired girl in 99 the same as the baby in 98?

    Thanks

This is just my opinion after taking a good look at both images.

Given that these are family photos I would trust the captions on the back.
I would not describe the girl in #99 as "dark haired". Her hair seems
to be more of a natural blonde, a year or so on from #98 where the hair
is baby fair & wispy. Also it is tough to make that comparison given
different exposure conditions (possibly different cameras) at different
    times.

Then looking at the eyes, they seem to be the same shade of blue. Next
the upper lip, particularly on the viewer's right seems to have a
    similar curve.

I would say it would be fair to identify the girl in #98 & #99 as the
same individual at different ages. I would say a visit to the elderly
Pamela would be in order to check on those blue eyes and upper lip
curl. Given that David was born in 1931 and appears to be 18 months to
2 years younger than his sister, her year of birth should be about
1928-29, making her approximately 84-83 today. I believe a confirmation
of her age would add to the argument that both photos are of her.

    Good luck.

That does not look like an 11-12 year old, but three years into the war
might mature a kid beyond his years. More importantly not all children
    grow according to expectations.
That looks like some sort of school award ceremony/prize giving. I
suspect you already know the school, so given the traditions of English
public schools, why not check their records to confirm the event and
award. They might also be able to give you details on their star pupil.

  5. Hi,

David Webb attended Luton Grammar School which no longer exists. He was indeed head boy and went on to become one of its most distinguished sons.

I managed to rescue quite a lot of documents relating to it including this one from 1950
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_luton_speech_1950.pdf
in which the name D.A. Webb appears more than once.

I note that that program is dated February 1950 which would make David
18-19. Is this a typical age for High School graduation in early post
    war England?

BTW: I am not familiar with this David Webb. What is his claim to fame,
and is he a family member?

This might be a coincidence, but my wife's great-grandfather was a
Webb. He was a surgeon in the Royal Irish Constabulary prior to
    partition.

  7. There does seem to be a bit of a resemblance. To learn all about David Webb, start here

and follow the links, including to NCROPA.

I've got a lot more to post including this latest tranche which appear to have been his mother's collection, so if you trawl through them you may find a clue, perhaps even a familiar face.

  8. I believe this
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_151.jpg
is the mother of David Webb
if so, she is the same woman as in this photo
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_157.jpg
    the old one.
In that photo, the woman is the same as the baby here
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_99.jpg
and as SavageDuck pointed out, here:
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_98.jpg
    This photograph
    http://www.infotextmanuscripts.org/webb/webb_photos_140.jpg
shows Webb and sister again; I'm fairly certain it's his sister, but I'm such a terrible judge of ages that it could be his mother.
    Any comments?
    Thanks
