I've just tried to use my 1D mkIV and Speedlight 580 mkII in very dim
conditions. The AF assist light do not come on. I went through the menu and
checked that the AF assist light is enabled - it is.

I tried the flash on a 50D body - it worked - the AF assist light did it's
    bit.

I'm now pawing through the manuals - can anybody shed any light on what I've
    get mis-set?

I've also tried the 580mkII on my 5DmkII - AF light worked perfectly.

I tried my 580 mk I on the 50D and the 5d mkII - AF light worked perfectly.
On the 1D mkIV - AF light did not work.

    I've updated the 1D mkIV firmware from 1.06 to 1.08 - no change. I've
removed the 1D battery and had another go - no change.

    It's a bit of a puzzle.

A bit of a long shot, but....

    From my 7D manual:
"If the external, EOS-dedicated Speedlite's [AF-assist beam firing] Custom
Function is set to [Disabled], the Speedlite will not emit the AF-assist beam
even if the camera's C.Fn III - 11-0/2/3 is set."

Also, are you sure that the flash unit isn't firing the assist beam? I think
both versions of the 580 have an IR assist beam, which wouldn't be visible to
    the naked eye.

    And another thing:

I *think* (though I'm not sure) that the 50D, unlike the 7D (and the 1D4?),
lacks an IR receiver, which might explain why things worked as you expected on
    your 50D.

I did a little more poking around. The instruction manual for my 50D doesn't
mention the IR assist beam; the 1D4 manual does. That doesn't explain why you
saw a visible assist beam with your 5D2, but maybe the 5D2 was set not to use
    the IR beam.

    Thanks for that.

I've checked checked the flash settings.

Both flash guns are set to enable AF beam assist. Visible red light is
emitted by both flashes on the 50D and 5D2. The 1D mkIV is not focussing so
I suppose no IR is being emitted.

Which would be normal if, on your 1D4, C.Fn III-15 (AF-assist beam firing) has
been inadvertently set to 0. If not, you may have to ship the camera off to
your equivalent of the Jamesburg Shop. Oh, well, Canon claims they treat 1Dx
users pretty well when they have problems. ;^)

    :

Thanks for your suggestions - I'm pretty sure now that it's not the
settings, so there may be a problem with the camera. I'll email Canon UK
with my problem and see if they have any suggestions before I go back to the
shop. I only bought it in October 2009 and in the UK there is a 2 year
warranty on the camera so any fault will get sorted out.

    I may be some time.
