How can I reset my directory to view digital images in the order taken, not processed?

I notice (under Windows XP at least) that when I edit a group of
images, then put them back into a directory, I can't view them by date
of picture taken (ie in the order they were initially shot) which I
want. There's a new order, perhaps related to the post-processing
date, and I can't seem to permanently change it in the directory. Is
there any way to do this?

In the Explorer window change the view to View-->Details. Then you can sort
the directory by name, type, size, Date modified and ascending or descending
order by clicking on the sorting panes on top of the listbox. After sorting
the directory in desired order, switch back to View--->Thumbnails and the
thumbnails appear in the previously sorted order.
