How do I use one of the RGB channels as the data for a black and white photo?

    Usually one of the three channels would be more suitable for black and
    white, but how do I use it?

    Another way would be to go to Saturation and turn it down to zero ...

    Another way would be to change the image's Mode to Lab ... and delete the a
    and b channels ...

    So on .... last time I looked there were about 5.297 ways to make an RGB
    image into B&W.
