How much should I charge?

An acquaintance of a friend asked me to videotape a half-hour press
conference. Broadcast quality (3-chip HDV OK) but no PA system so
(depending on the layout of the room) I'll either mount a shotgun mic on
the camera (reporting style) or have a separate sound person.

Out of 30 min. of tape, the person will then select three 10-sec
soundbytes, and I'm to deliver 8 DVD copies two hours after the press
    conference.

What can I charge for this?

Oh yeah, they also want versions of the vidoes for web broadcasts.

I guess it all depends on which country you reside in and what the going
rates are - why not get a quote as if you wanted the job done?

A quote is essentially what I'm asking for here.

In N.A. (Canada or the U.S.), what would someone charge for this service?

In my part of Ontario, Canada, most shooters I know would charge $100
    - $200 just to videotape the press conference.
BTW, I'd put a wireless mic on the podium as I don't trust the sound
quality from a shotgun unless I'm very close (less than 6 ft.).
If you have to hire a sound person, he/she and the gear are another
    expense.
Burning DVDs and encoding for web is another separate fee which could
be anywhere from $100 and up, depending on the time required.

I only have two shooting charges. Day and half day. If I got a call from
you about this I'd probably start at $1800.00 US. This gives myself and
an audio guy a half day rate and covers tape, remote editing and export
in any format. You're only about $400.US from a satellite uplink which
gives the immediacy for free press nation wide - if you do your
advisories well it can be a huge amount of eyeballs and brains.

And essentially what you have been told is that since we didn't know
the rates in your (undisclosed) market, you would be better off
getting quotes there in your area. This newsgroup covers the
    known universe.

Perhaps we should have a séance to try to find Bill's answer.

I think a Ouija board would be more Conduit's style.

And the "known universe", at the risk of rattling your fragile little
cage, extends far beyond the U.S. borders.

I was expecting a reasonably intelligent interlocutor (present company
excluded, Richard Crowley?) to specify the market they were quoting,
which is exactly what most people did in the various forums I asked.

You are a grade-A ass, Richard Crowley, a typical usenet malcontent who
avoids eye contact in real life and grows balls only once he's sitting at
the computer . You are unable to ignore a simple question, because "I
don't know" makes you feel powerless. So instead you lash out.

I have lurked here for years, and I can't possibly be the only one to
abstain from posting to avoid clashing with your chronic case of anal
discomfort and assorted crappy moods. Believe it or not, the group would
be a vastly better and more welcoming place without you, so do take this
under advisement next time "Wheel of Fortune" is pre-empted and you feel
    like turning on the computer.

The group will do fine, even deprived of your generally misinformed and
    misdirected "advice".

Thanks to everyone who offered useful advice. I quoted a fair price
based on the responses I received here and on other forums. The client,
however, chose to go with someone "who'll do it for free" - perhaps a
friend with an HD camcorder and a copy of imovie?

I doutb they delivered DVDs on the same day, however, let alone
    broadcast-quality video.

And BTW, is there a reason why you snipped the line from my post where I
PECIFICALLY mentioned the market, Richard Crowley? Other than to give free
rein to your bad mood, I mean?

That was a rhetorical question, BTW. We all know the answer to that.
