How to get better than DVD Quality from Divx

I'm buying a Philips DVP-5990 DVD/Divx player. Besides DVD, it will
    play high bitrate Divx.

My question is that when converting high quality sources, at what
approximate bitrate does Divx surpass DVD quality.

For example, if I convert a HD home video to 9000 bitrate DVD, how
much better would a 3000 (or higher) bitrate Divx file look.

Would the difference even be noticeable? I have a quad core PC, so
conversion time isn't an issue. I'm more interested in getting the
    best quality picture.

    Hope my question makes sense.
