    Hi,
I am new to video editing and burning on VCD/SVCD, and I have a very
basic question: If I have a given file that has the .mpg extension,
how can I tell whether it is mpeg1 or mpeg2?

    Thanks in advance,
    Lynn

Open it in MediaPlayer. Then look the Advanced tab of "Properties".
You'll see if it uses an Mpeg-1 or an Mpeg-2 filter.

You can also use GSpot, and render the clip. It shall tell you the
    same as MediaPlayer.
