HP 4100C: Blank areas show up black in saved image file

I have an HP Scanjet 4100C on a system running Windows XP Pro. Most of
the time it works fine. But occasionally, when I scan a drawing or text
document which has lots of blank spaces there is a problem when the scan
is saved. The scanned image looks normal in the scanning software
window, but when I save the scan as a .jpg file and then view the file,
most of the areas that should be all white (because they are blank) show
up black. This is difficult to describe. Put another way, it looks as
though I cut out all the areas of the document that have any image and
pasted them on a black sheet of paper. I find nothing about this on HP's
site, and since it doesn't always happen it is difficult to
troubleshoot. Any suggestions on a fix? Thanks!

Problem solved! I'm using HP Precision Scan LT, which came with the
scanner. I finally found the section in the help file where it says that
if the image is saved in the text mode (which is the default unless it
detects color or a photo) it saves in a format optimized for OCR. If I
manually change the mode after each scan to "black and white drawing",
    the problem disappears.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
