I have two Hi8 tapes and I need to get their contents onto a mac mini so
I can edit them down with imovieHD (I'll be dicarding about 70% of the
contents to get my finished video). This is a one time thing so I don't
want to buy expensive capture hardware.

I see that a lot of camera and video stores will convert my Hi8 tapes to
DVD's for a reasonable price but I don't know how how to import the
contents of a DVD into imovieHD.

Is it possible to import the contents of a DVD into imovie?

    Best Regards,

Not familiar with the mac mini, but I'll assume that it has a firewire port.
If you can find someone with a Digital 8 camcorder (only made by Sony) you
may be in luck. Many (not all) Digital 8 camcorders can "pass thru" a video
signal and convert an analog signal to digital .. they also can play a Hi-8
tape and output it digitally (again not all models)
