Instead of a DSLR that takes movies...

Well, there's a surprise. A dedicated video camera takes better
videos than a dslr, and a dslr takes better stills than a video
camera. You'd almost think things were planned that way.

There's been a lot of noise (LOL) lately about Bret's new toy and it's
movies. So how about a full on movie camera that takes decent, 7 megapixel
    stills too?

I was pretty pissed off about the D90 and hell will freeze over before I'll
buy anything with the Canon brand on it so...

I just bought myself a JVC HD, digital video camera. So far I've shot
precisely 3 minutes of footage and taken a mere 2 still shots with it but I
can tell you now, it's video capabilites blow a DSLR out of the water and
it's still shots arem't too shabby either. After Chrissy I'll post some
movies an still on my site.

Does it shoot 1080p HD? Nope.
    Interchangeable lenses? Nope.
    Awesome low-light performance? Nope.
    21MP stills? Nope.

Yeah, it really blows the 5D2 out of the water. NOT!
Maybe you should have just said, "It really blows."

The video world is still buzzing with the introduction of the 5D2.
Every day features the release of more great footage taken with it.
    The JVC? Not so much.

That's like comparing a Hassy to a cellphone cammy.

    Actually...
Besides supporting 1080p, the new camcorders include a HDMI 1.3 interface
and a progressive scan 3CCD imaging system. It weighs about a pound and a
    half, battery included.
    http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028255&pathId=141&page=12

I really wanted the GZ-HD7. I couldn't get it for Christmas but when it
arrives early next year, I'll show you what stunning really is in the "video
world". Even this beauty is less than a "L" lens costs. How many did you say
    you have?

The good part is the HD6 sells for around $900 US. How much did you pay for
your "leading edge" DSLR that won't focus during recording? BTW did you
discover yet how long it runs before overheating and shutting down? Give it
time. Summer's not all that far away!

    Low light operation?
Don't go there Bret... If you do you'll discover how agricultural your 5D
really is when it comes to 5 Lux, low light movies... Being focused on the
    fly too!

Certainly it doesn't take 21 Mp stills but the still shots it takes are as
good as your old 20D and with a 1.8 Fujinon lens, the IQ is up there amongst
the best of the entry level DSLR kits. 11"x14" is the sample print I made.
Impossible to tell if a 40D or a Everio took it.

I must have missed the "video world buzzing" thing. The good-ol-boys making
the "Navy" clothing commercials at Tangalooma had a thing or three to say
about cameras when I had them over for dinner. *RED* is the buzz word, not
    5D II.

The only thing that's buzzing around here are a few mossies as they hit the
electro grill. Everyone else is glued to the new 50" wide screen plasma I
bought just so Julian's relative's get to see the JVC's movies at their mind
    blowing best.

Hey Bret... Have you ever tried to use a "hassy"?

Don't go down that road either mate. Alan Browne can tell you a thing or two
about his challenge to me that my digital enlargements couldn't equal those
from a MF... http://www.d-mac.info/digi-enlarge.htm As he tried to up the
anti from 645 to 6x7 and still lost out when his nominated, independent
arbitrator was "surprised by the quality" of them.
    http://www.douglasjames.com.au/moats_comments.htm

It's true, the JVC isn't a still camera worthy of a mind boggling image
description, any more than the 5D is an exceptional (even a half decent)
movie maker's camera Anytime you want to go head to head with a movie from
your new toy... Feel free to throw down the gauntlet mate. I'm no expert
movie maker but there's a couple of friends I have who are...

In the mean time... Show us your ability with the new camera for what it is.
Don't try to push the barrow about how good It's video is because it simply
isn't as good as my $900 handicam. Do that and I won't try to bullshit you
that the handicam's stills are as good as your DSLR's.

You didn't leave in the part where knobhead admitted how slow he was by
saying "After Chrissy I'll post some movies an still on my site" at
    11.30am on Boxing Day.

Knowing Doggy and his 'challenges' if questioned in 6 months about where
his video is he will say 'Chrissy is still 6 months away'

So you tell us how long this is? And when you do also post proof.
(This will never happen, Doggy is a compulsive liar)
I don't think Bret has ever stated he wants to make 5 lux low light
movies. Remember it is you who does the filming 'in the basement'
You shouldn't be bragging that a camera has a higher IQ than you Doggy
Yeh RED alright the colour of your arse cheeks after the pounding the
    'NAVY' good-ol-boys gave you.

Julian's back in town hey? Guess we know who will be replying to this
as you have stated on several occasions you have me killfiled
Speaking of challenges aren't there still a few open ones directed at
you? Has Jeff spent the last 8 months sitting by the letter box waiting
for the court order? It mustn't be there yet as the party hasn't
    happened yet.

What about the Manly stepped out pano? Just goes to show you being in
that area is the closest you have ever been to manly

Hahaha you are a wanker. That's like saying My new car is better than
yours, I'll take you on but I'll get Jamie Whincup to drive mine for me.

As it is after chrissy when will you show us yours?
You are the master of bullshit you dipshit.

The OP was also in true Doggy MacDonald fashion and off topic.

Back into the basement Doggy, still over 4 weeks of school holidays to
    test out that new cam

NO 1080p, you said? It appears you don't know as much about current
video technology as you might want everyone to believe.
Then again, given the amount of arse-kissing that characterizes
the bunch of nongs that follow you around, it's not surprising...

OBTW: if you want REAL low-light performance that really rocks,
get yourself a D700: the 5d2 is not even in the ballpark.

So which model is it that you are claiming to have bought, D-Mac?

Is it the one that does the 7MP stills but no HD, or the HD one which
    only captures 2MP (1920x1080) stills? If it's the HD6 then I kinda
doubt those 2MP stills are as good as my old 20D, which if I recall
    had 8 MP.
No fixed lens camcorder is going to seriously compete with a top DSLR
when it comes to still photography so don't even go there.

Also, the HD6 is listed for $1399, not $900 as you claim.

If you missed the buzz about the 5D2 then you really must've been
locked in that basement. It's all the rage in the video world, and
comparisons have been made between it and the $40,000 RED camera.

I'm not claiming that the video capabilites of the 5D2 are equal to a
full HD camcorder. It isn't designed to be that. However, it does do
things that not many HD camcorders can match, certainly none of them
for sale anywhere near it's price point. And none of those cameras
can make beautiful 21MP stills like the Fab 5D2.

Summer is 6 months away, about as far as you can get.
And why would it overheat? This ain't that Sigma junk you're used to
    using.
    ---------------------------------
Can't wait to see your low-light footage. Be sure to include a few
still captures as well so we can laugh at the noise. Wow, you cammy
goes all the way up to ISO 400!

Did you print it on canvas? LOL!

Nope. But I've always wanted to.

Not very well. AF is slow and clumsy in video mode. You can still
manually focus, of course, but it is impossible to check critical
focus on a 3" LCD. Without a full-blown Redrock Micro rig and an
external HD monitor, I'm sorta SOL.
I haven't really tested that. About the same as any other camcorder,
    I'd guess.
I couldn't tell you. I did film some flying birds yesterday, but I
haven't looked at the footage yet. Here's a quick RAW clip of the
birds mostly at rest. It might not look smooth at the higher
    resolutions due to bandwidth limitations.
