irfanview has a plug-in that lets me view the CRW files
    from my 300D.

The 300D manual says that CRW files have a medium-quality
jpeg image imbedded in them. Is irfan showing me the
raw file or just the jpeg ?

  2. IrfanView shows a conversion of the actual Raw data. The JPEG file is
usually a much smaller file, used for a quick preview.

    Depends how its configured. Options->Properties->Plugins

You'll know how it is set. Decoding and displaying the raw data takes a
few seconds, the embedded JPEG is nearly instant.

As far as I'm aware it decodes raw to 8 bits per colour channel
so you lose most of the advantages of using RAW in IV. :-(

If you dont add the canon DLLS your only reading the imbedded Jpeg - :
fortuantely Irfan view now has the required DLLS available as a seperate
download - or you can extract them from the file viewer utility

Only if you go into the preferences and set it up that way. If the
images are coming up from hard disk in less than a second, you can be
sure that you are looking at the embedded JPEG.

It's really not worth looking at anything else, really, unless you have
the camera set to give small JPEGs. Irfanview is 8-bit, and you don't
get to adjust exposure or white balance, or any other parameters with
the RAW data, so it's going to look basically the same, anyway.

There are two ways it read the RAW data; the one you mentioned, and
dcraw.c. It can use the dcraw code, which is embedded in the plugin.

  7. That also depends on the Camera model. Some models can produce 2 files (a
..thm and a .raw) per shot, others embed the raw data in the thumbnail file.
In the latter case one needs to specify that the raw data needs to be

It's pretty obvious that you're looking at the THM. It is extremely
pixellated at any reasonable viewing size. Irfanview will not recognize
them as graphics files, and will skip over them, unless you force them
into the program by dragging them in, or opening in "all files" mode.
