Is Mpeg audio needed for PAL DVD?

Pinnacle Studio 8 has an option of creating Mpeg audio.
The info on Pinnacle Studio 8 is not clear if I should be using Mpeg
audio when creating a DVD. It seems to suggest that I need this option
for PAL video, but is still not clear.

Should I choose MPeg audio when creating a DVD in PAL video for
playing on a desktop DVD player?

    Regards Brian

You don't *need* it, but it's a much more efficient use of the space on
your DVD. Less wasted space for the audio means you can use a higher
bitrate for your video (or put more minutes of video at the same bitrate)

    Thanks Will.
Does it slow down the rendering time of the video when Mpeg sound is
    used?

You can use Ac3 as well.

No, the encoding time for MPEG audio is trivial, compared to the time to
    compress the video.
