If I convert a VOB file from a DVD video to Mpeg 2 will there be some
    loss in video quality?

Don't count on what I'm writing but I think that the files may be exactly
the same. I have changed the VOB file extension to MPG & found the programs
like Windows Media Player will play the program OK.

If there's actually a conversion, there should be loss. But if what
you do is ripping a VOB as .mpg, then there's no conversion. Or if you
open the VOB in an mpeg editor, and save it as .mpg, then there's no
    loss.

And you can change an .MPG file to .AVI and Windows Media Player will
still play it fine. That sure doesn't mean that the file was
    converted, though.
