Saw a great documentary on him and was wondering what camera's he
    used.

Also, when a field reporter goes to an area that required quiet, how
do they deal with modern auto winders? They are quite loud. How do
they deal with that, pull out an old FE with hand wind?

    Thx

I don't know if he has one, but the Elan 7 is almost silent.

He has used a Canon 1n for quite a while.
But since it's obsolete, I don't think he uses it anymore. Could
imagine that he's gone digital, too, no idea.

....but the shutter sound of the FE is louder than (say) an F5's or F100's. I
think you would want a Leica for stealth.

    Eos 1 or 1n
I've seen that film several times ("war photographer" by Christian
Frei) and I recommend watching it to everyone interested in reportage
    photography.

They're not loud. It only seems that way to the photographer because the
motordrive is so close to your head. I can't imagine Nachtwey being
worried about the sound of his camera's though, most guns are many times
louder... The truth is, nobody really cares how loud your camera is.
When people are busy with stuff that's important to them, they won't
    hear you anyway.

I'm not shure what Nachtwey uses, but here:
    http://www.apple.com/pro/photo/nachtwey/ it says Eos 1V & 1Ns and Eos
    1Ds.

But I don't think modern winders are that loud. (certainly when
comparing my old minolta 9000+winder with my Dynax 7). And if that's a
real concern I reckon that most photojournalists will have a
viewfinder camera with them like a Minolta CLE or Leica M7 or
something similar. Both inconspicuous and silent.

    Cheers
