  1. How the hell did you get from my remarks that I think the future is "large flat
    screen, probably wall mounted" :)

Your idea of future display's depends very much on what you actually mean.

If you mean that you display unit and controller are separate but sold as a unit
then I wouldn't disagree but I wouldn't agree if you're saying that you have to
buy a display unit and a separate control unit.

Technophobes love separate boxes, Joe Public likes an all in one box that needs
    the minimum amount of "plumbing".

Remember that the original home video kits were two units, camera and recorder
but what everybody wanted was a camcorder. The same applies to HiFi setups, you
can still put together an impressive stack of separate bits which give wonderful
sound. What do the public want, iPods etc!!!

It would, also, seem unlikely that units will be connected by cable, wireless
seems more probably. I use wireless connections "recreationally" :) between my
pvr upstairs and the main TV downstairs, digieye for the remote and a video
RX/TX both purchased on ebay (total cost 60 quid).

You said HDTV with USB ports. Are you expecting HDTV CRT's soon? No!
So where talking flat, and more and more these are appearing with Wall
Mounting in mind, i.e. the tuner and input switching in a separate box. And
some people will want to replace the seperate tuner box with a MediaPC, and
preferably not have to buy the tuner box in the first place.

  3. OK, so I forget to add " ....." after the mounted to show that I was referring
    to the whole para.

However, I'm quite certain you realized that and are just being pedantic :)

To be even more pedantic, note that I said "USB ports etc", the etc is important
as it shows I was being deliberately vague about input types.

and further pedanticism (is there such a word?) , you use the phrase "some
people..." which is very different to suggesting that the future lies solely in
that direction. You've already stated that Plasma already use a separate box
but LCD widescreen which post date plasma don't (I'm sure there are exceptions)
My knowledge of the NTSC HDTVs is very limited but I understood that
increasingly the major manufacturers are producing HD Built In TVs because of
    public demand.

It will be interesting to see which direction PAL land takes bearing in mind
that HDTV will probably only be available via cable or satellite. However,
looking at the freeview example which was a separate tuner box and is now built
in on most new TV models, I would suggest that built in is the more probable
    mainstream route.

  4. Yes, it's "pedantry" - I found myself in the position of having to
look that up some time ago due to these infuriating ingrates ;-)
