I could do with telephoto and wide angle lenses to compliment the zoom
lens on my D70. I only need them for occasional use (seriously only
about twice a year) and the images will mainly be used on the web.

Would anyone have any recommendations of reasonably priced lenses?

  2. Have a look through the secondhand selection on the London Camera
Exchange website. They sometimes have surprisingly good value lenses.

I have just done what you suggested and didn't find any bargains in
    used Nikon brand lenses.

LCE's prices seem on a par with most dealers.

    I know I probably can't afford Nikon, that's why I'm asking about
    alternatives.

  5. Perhaps I should have put it differently. Secondhand Nikon lenses from
reputable dealers sometimes represent surprisingly good value when
compared with new ones. LCE have an easily searchable website that
covers a number of different branches and IME tend to be on the low side
of typical dealer pricing, so are a good starting point.
If the OP has only seen new prices, he might not realise it's possible
to get a Nikon 55-200mm zoom for a little over 100quid. It might not be
the latest spec, construction may be a bit plasticky and the AF a bit
slow, but the optics will be pretty decent for not much money.

Sorry, Geoff. I buy and sell Nikon lenses and have a reasonable idea
of market prices, so I used that as a basis to judge LCE's offerings.

What range of focal lengths are you interested in? Once I know that,
I can probably suggest some reasonably priced lenses that will produce
    good results.

I would look for a used Sigma or Tamron ultrawide 10 or 12 mm to ~20mm
(ish). Not the sharpest but a lot of fun and would complement your
    kit lens (18-70mm?)

I would also get a used 70-300mm of some sort that will be fairly
    sharp and flexible too.

Have you thought about hiring one or both lenses?
