I'm looking to get a cheap entry level type digital camera to use just
as a hobby, and for family photos etc etc. I have practically no camera
experience, so I dont really know what would be best.

I have about $300-$400 to spend, and was just wondering what camera
would be the best for me, and for my budget?

    Thanks in advance.
    Adam.

  2. Have a look at www.dpreview.com for info/specs and image samples. Find one
that you think you may be interested in and the head to
    www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au for the aussie prices.

    Adam,
My budget was also around $400. Have just purchased a Pentax Optio 33L
    online from digital camera warehouse..
http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au ...on special at $453. Really
would have liked the Canon A70 but just a bit far above budget. ($569 at
www.pcquest.com.au was the cheapest I could find locally and online)
Additional Compact flash card cost me $63 for 128mb. $12 freight. Blew
    budget out to around $500.

PCquest had the Canon A60 ... 2 mp camera with zoom...for $429 if you want
to get closer to your budget and still have a quality camera.

check out www.megapixel.net for more reviews. Some cameras not reviewed on
    dpreview are on megapixel.net.

    Have fun.

PS it's nice to answer a question for a change rather than just lurk!

Just make sure you get one with Optical zoom and not digital zoom.

I was thinking about getting the A300, as I would rather buy from an
actual shop rather the internet, and teds has one for $400.
http://tinyurl.com/tfca I was just wondering if anyone had any comments
    on these cameras?

    Adam

P.S. I know digital zoom sucks, so I won't be planning on using it.

    Hi,

I have the Canon A200 which is very similar to the A300 but with only 2MP.
Trust me when I say get something else! The flash recharge time is painfully
    slow.

With your budget, I'd probably get the Kodak DX6330. It has 3MP like the A300
but also has a 3x optical zoom lens. The images probably won't be as
detailed as the A300 (not an issue for 6x4 prints) but the colours will be
    more "pleasing".

K-Mart are selling it for $389 and I'm sure stores like Harvey Norman or
Teds can do an even better price. Before you buy it, make sure you try it
out first. Take notice of the auto-focus and flash recharge times.
